چکیده
Abstract This paper proposes a typology of compositionality as manifest in human language and animal communication. At the heart is distinction between bare compositionality, which meaning complex expression determined solely by meanings its constituents, constructional constituents also various aspects structure. Bare may be observed well communication systems, including primates birds. Architecturally, provides foundations for while phylogenetically, potential starting point evolution language.

Constructional Meaning and Compositionality
One of the major motivations for constructional approaches to grammar is that a given rule of syntactic formation can sometimes, in fact often, be associated with more than one semantic specification. For example, a pair of expressions like purple plum and alleged thief 25 call on different rules of semantic combination. The first involves something closely related to intersection of sets: a pu...
متن کاملConstructional Compositionality and the English Resultative
Recent work on grammatical constructions in English (Lakoff 1987, Goldberg 1995, Kay & Fillmore 1999, Fillmore, Kay & O’Connor 1988) has provided strong evidence that the meaning of an utterance is not always derivable from its lexical parts and that the semantics of a sentence is partly comprised of meaning ascribed to syntactic constructions. Lacking in most of these accounts, however, is a d...
متن کاملConstructional Integration, Grammaticization, and Serial Verb Constructions
An important but under-appreciated aspect of grammar is the extent of the integration a grammatical construction specifies among its constitutive elements. Besides its vital role in synchronic grammar, this essential aspect of constructional meaning is a pivotal factor in grammaticization. These points will be illustrated through a variety of construction types drawn from a number of diverse la...
متن کاملBare Plurals, Bare Conditionals, and Only
The compositional semantics of sentences like Only mammals give live birth and The flag flies only if the Queen is home is a tough problem. Evidence is presented to show that only here is modifying an underlying proposition (its 'prejacent'). After discussing the semantics of only, the question of the proper interpretation of the prejacent is explored. It would be nice if the prejacent could be...
